Hi,

I'm a Belgian medical student.
First of all, excuse me for writing in English,I can speak and understand German, but writing is still difficult.(you can answer in German)

For the moment I'm in my last year of medical school.
I want to become an orthopaedic surgeon but in Belgium it's very hard to get a "weiterbildungsstelle". The uni decides whether you are allowed or not.
This year there are 14 candidates and only 5 places. So, it's very hard.

I heard that Orthopaedic surgery isn't that popular in Germany so I went a week "zum hospitationen" in a German hospital.
It was a great week but it left me with a lot of questions.

First of all, in the hospital I visited, the assistants didn't get any teaching at all in the operating room.
They were not allowed to do anything in the OP. Only a few stiches at the end of the operation.

Is this normal in German Hospitals? Isn't the purpose of the "weiterbildung" that you are teached and that you learn how to operate?

There were also assistants of 40 years old !!!!

Is this normal in Germany???In Belgium you finish your "weiterbildung" wenn you are 31-34 years old and you can start and work immediately in a hospital as a specialist. And you can do all the operations by yourself!

There is also a common trunk of 2 years in "unfallchirurgie".

Do you have to do this common trunk during the first two years?Or can you do the first 4 years of orthopaedic surgery followed by the common trunk???

I know, a lot of questions.
But I think you friendly Germans will give me an answer.
