US Med School..Step1

Hi,

I am an MS-II in a US med school. Just wanted to let people know that if they want to break into a US med school they better be smart as hell to get a stipen. That way shit is cheaper. You still have to do four years of school at a US school. Choose a small school with a good pre-med prog. B/C then you get more help from profs. Going to a big school is def. a mistake as you have to deal with a lot of gunners.
The MCAT is no joke. A lot of people talk about passing the MCAT. There is no passing all you get is a score. If you are non US you better get a 33-35 and then maybe you will get in. You also need a GPA of 3.7-4.0 and then maybe you get in. In addition, you need to do a lot of research, shadow doc's, go to a developing country and do some medical work there.
Getting into a US school for US-cit. is hard. Being no-US is even harder. Usually 1% of all non-US applicants get and interview. Less than that get in.
I am from Germany and I went to the Amerika Haus to get some info on how to break in. They laughed at me when I told them about my plann. I now understand why. I worked my ass off for 4 years and the MCAT is no Joke. Verbal reasoning is hard as hell. Try it out buy some free samples. During my application I was depressed for a year B/C I thought I would not get in. The school I am at now has 10,000 people trying to get in. They have seats for 150 students. Do you really think they will go through the VISA hussle and the financial risk to take a German. No. The only way they do it is if you have hala scores and loots of backup to schow that your presents at the school will be of value to US students.

Now... Step 1.

Dont do Kaplan it is a waste of money and time. Get the USMLE world qbank. It is like the real test. Trust me. Get first aid know it back to front. Path rapid review by E. F. Goljan. Also look for his audio and notes, they are illegal to down load. This kid knows what's up. He knows the test. Know his stuff score high. He also has a biochem book. Then use gunnertraining.com. It is like first aid but better. It is new on the market, but this shit works. Best is to start to years before you take test. You think I am joking. All the gunners at my school use it. They know and retain shit. Start gunning one year before the exam and go hard. Another thing. Do questions questions questions and do more and then do more.

Um Gottes Willen Junge, wenn du wirklich ein MS-II bist dann würde ich hoffen dass du die Professionalität später aufweist einen etwas kultivierteren Umgangston zu benutzen. Schön und gut dass du es geschafft hast in eine Medical School genommen zu werden aber ... muss das denn sein? "This kid knows what's up" oder "That way shit is cheaper" oder "You think I am joking" ... wir wissen doch alle dass es schwierig ist in den USA als Arzt Fuß zu fassen.

Dennoch, du hast Recht. Es ist verdammt schwierig als Amerikaner überhaupt reinzukommen. Als nicht-Amerikaner erst recht. Ich erlebe am laufenden Band wie sich amerikanische Bewerber auf die Medical School ihre Bewerbungen mit Forschung aufpimpen versuchen zum Beispiel...

Deine Empfehlung eine kleine versus größere Uni für die Undergraduate Ausbildung zu besuchen kann ich nicht bestätigen, denn es gibt für beide sowohl Vor und Nachteile. Insofern kann man nicht generalisieren.

Zu den Step 1 Empfehlungen - ich habe zum Step 1 und Step 2 CK First Aid und Kaplan benutzt und ganz gute Resultate erzielt. Wenn ich im Nachhinein alles in allem betrachte ist es relativ egal wie man lernt, Hauptsache man lernt und man lernt verdammt viel. Und ganz ehrlich, ob man 240 oder 260 in den Steps bekommt ist relativ egal. Hauptsache man ist im Mittelfeld oder darüber, dann sieht man als ausländischer Bewerber ganz in Ordnung aus...

Wenn die MS2 heutzutage so sind, wird mir ja richtig Angst wenn bald die Medstudents zu uns ins Department zu ihrer Rotation kommen...

I am really sorry that I upset you with my words. Sorry. I hope you can get over it. I hope you never go on SND because the way people talk on that site could really disturbe you. I dont really think the words Kid, Joke ... are that bad. So again sorry for the tone of my message. Although I should advise you that some attendings have called some residents and med students " a f-ing dumm a$$". One of my lecturers said that the name Hedgehog gene makes him want to throw up in his mouth.

Anyways, a small school is the way to go. It would have been nice if the other post could have provided some of the cons and pros.. but you might have not gone to a US school and therfore it would seem hard for you to write down any hard facts.
Yes you need to study a lot, but there is a smart way and a not so smart way. I just tried to post what people at my schools and many other schools do. But if you have 1200$ for Kaplan, why not? It cost a lot it must work. First aid is not good for path. Goljan is very good and will fill the gaps. Gunnertraining (although the name is kind of sad) is cheap, high yield and allows you to convert the material into longterm information.

So I guess it is more important to corret someones choice of words than to focus on the content. I get it. Trust me, you will not see any MS-II b/c we dont rotate until 3rd year.

Not just for the way some people argue on this site but also for step1... and you professional life as health care provider.. The name of the game is not WHAT.. it is WHY!!! If you disagree.. give a reason... anyone can make a statement.

I just dont get it. Just makes me question you. If I would be beating on someones tone and wording, I would sure as shit not fall into the same pit. The reason why I posted is not to show off my achievemnet of getting in. I just wanted to give some tips and tricks. An undergrad school is 25000 a year.. that is a lot and the validates me saying -> That shit is $$. I think we are just lost in translation. Anyways got luck to you and I hope things work out.
You worked really hard and got an average score on Step 1. I think that is great and shows you are doing the right stuff.

Nur zu Klarstellung, ich meinte bei der Step 1 Vorbereitung nicht die Kaplan Kurse sondern die Kaplan Fragen. Die Kurse sind in der Tat teuer aber vom Hörensagen sehr sehr gut wenn man die Zeit und das Geld hat. Ich hatte leider keins von beiden...

Aber Danke für den gunnertraining Tip, als ich die Steps gemacht habe gabs das noch nicht. Ist bestimmt für die eine oder andere Person ganz nützlich.

Just to make sure there is nothing lost in translation - any attending that calls his residents and students that is out of line and has no business being in a teaching setting. Such behavior may have been tolerated in medicine decades ago but has no place in modern times. Enough said.

It happens all the time and you can differ from that all you want. As is, I think you are out of line whith your negative comments. What I cant discredit is that you made it into a US residency, which is nice. Soon on..
