Hello
i heard the rules in Germany are specific for each state .
The prerequisites (medical studies of 6 years, sufficient proficiency in German, clean criminal record etc.) are the same in every Bundesland with the Bundesärzteordnung (BÄO (http://www.gesetze-im-internet.de/b_o/BJNR018570961.html)) being a federal law.
what is the appropriate terminology for "medical residency " in german ?
(Facharzt-)Weiterbildung
could some one please explain me how to choose universities and how to apply ?
Universities are not responsible for the (post-graduate) FA-Weiterbildung. You can apply to whichever hospital you wish to work for. However, you need a medical licence, see my reply here (http://www.medi-learn.de/foren/showthread.php?t=79963).

Besides, for most job offerings, you have to prove that you have sufficient German language skills.
